Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this magnificent Queen Anne style solid silver "Monteith" bowl made by silversmith Alexander Clark & Co of Birmingham in 1924.
The bowl features an array of features that resemble those on a Queen Anne bowl such as the fluted body and gadrooned foot of the monteith. Additionally, the bowl is based on a Monteith and features a band of "U" shaped notches on the top bezel.
A "Monteith" bowl was originally introduced in the 17th Century in order to cool glasses in a Verriere fashion. This meant that the bowl would feature a band of notches on the brim which allowed for the base of a wine glass to be 'hooked' onto it and the body to rest in the bowl which would contain ice water. This design was invented in order to prevent the glasses from rolling and clashing into each other.
Further information and interesting history regarding Monteith bowls can be found here (click).
The bowl can be also used for other purposes such as a punch bowl, fruit bowl or even for a luxurious and ornate manner to present a bouquet of flowers in a rose bowl fashion.
The bowl features two blank cartouches on both sides which allows for any personal monograms/engraving to be made.
The bowl weighting a hefty 858 grams is further evident upon holding in person: the quality and gauge of silver used to craft this bowl is excellent with a thick and trustworthy feel in hand. As such, the bowl also features a sturdy foot which allows for a significant amount of fruit/beverages/content of your choice.
Full set of English hallmarks are present on this bowl - Please note the marks are slightly worn.
This monteith bowl most certainly presents a historic and bold aesthetic charm to its design and would grace a dining table as a centre display piece for interior design or alternatively as a practical piece of silverware in order to enjoy an indulging experience of holding fruits/food contents of your choice.
