Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this rare and exceptional solid silver pair of Victorian fish servers made in 1863 by Martin, Hall & Co of Sheffield.
Unlike most counterpart Victorian servers, this set offers the most magnificent and intricate hand-piercing on a thick and good gauge of silver. (Most examples will have a thinner blade which is easier to pierce whereas this piece is not only very sturdy but has an extraordinary amount of piercings). One can imagine how meticulous the silversmith would have been in order to create such a precise pair. Without even a single slip of the hand, more areas are pierced than not, all to an impressively accurate degree and rare motif. (Please do indulge in zooming in the photos to further appreciate the workmanship).
The handles and terminals are equally decorative with gadrooned edges and rococo style motifs. The cartouches have been engraved with a family crest on both the knife and fork.
In addition to its aesthetic beauty, due to the design and sturdy quality, the pair would serve as an excellent practical piece of silverware even in the modern day. Whether be it serving grilled fish or lifting the meat off the bone in a soup, due to the holes, the set would efficiently scoop out only the meat leaving behind any extras.
Crisp English hallmarks are present on the reverse side of the pair of servers.
