Description and Details
We are delighted to be able to offer this very large and heavy snuff box, made by silversmith Daniel & John Wellby of London in 1912.
The box features a very heavy and thick exterior profile, somewhat similar of a jewellery box/larger cigar box but is made from pure sterling silver with no inner liners/wooden box as found in latter examples.
The exterior design features a Georgian style with reeded lines on the sides, engine turning on the top and bottom with a floral chased border on the top lid with a vacant cartouche in the centre.
The quality of the box is apparent by holding it in hand feeling its heavy weight, thick walls and its overall heft and presence. The box also retains a smooth hinge and lid that has a perfect closure.
The interior is fully gilded with a rich gold tone - one minor point to note is that there is an area of wear/decolouration where the gilding has a different texture (shown in the last photo).
The box is fully hallmarked with on both the lid and base with English marks.
