Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this magnificent Victorian solid silver wine jug/ewer made by silversmith Stephen Smith in London, 1881.
The ewer being made by Stephen Smith features his distinguished and intricate design of a cast-silver 'frieze' depicting grapevines and lions around the waist of the body in 'Cellini' style.
The frieze's band of intricate and immaculate detailing is particularly noteworthy and highlights the level of excellence in the design, proportion and aesthetics of this ewer.
The top finial features a chased snake design bud which allows for an easy opening of the lid. Attached to the top is the swan-neck shaped cast handle, which has further foliate motifs splayed across both sides.
The mid-section of the ewer along with its frieze is presented on top of a sturdy foot which conjoins with the narrowed bottom of the body, further highlighting its elegant curved aesthetics.
The entirety of the ewer is gilt and presents a lustrous tone of gold, ideal for accenting opulent interiors with glamour.
The interior of the ewer has no leaks and can hold liquids for practical usage.
The study weight and excellent build quality become ever more apparent in hand, complimenting the overall large size and capacity which allows for both a magnificent display piece on a dining table and as a practical jug, should you wish to use it for a beverage of your preference.
A full set of English hallmarks are present on the underside of the spout.
