One accidental slip of the hand and the entire beaker would be lost, having to be melted, putting all the effort of the silversmith (separately from the engraver) to waste. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFurthermore, it is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of the period; engraving such an extensive surface, let alone a curved one, would have been a costly endeavour and thus also reflects the status of the commissioner\/owner. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe interior of the beaker, as well as the cartouche, has been gilded.
