Description and Details
A German c.18th Century Porcelain Snuff Box - Exterior hand painted floral design with a painting of a countryside scenery portraying two people in the foreground with a picturesque village in the background and boats sailing on the waters. The interior features a hand-painted landscape with what appears to be two merchants dealing over a barrel of ale. Unconventionally, there is a third painting on the bottom of the box which also depicts the recurring theme of boats and a waterscape. The porcelain is mounted on a metal hinge with a classic thumbpiece of German porcelain snuff boxes of the 18th century.
Porcelain snuff boxes were most prominently made and used in the 18th century with distinguishing features such as hand paintings inside and on all dimensions of the box, and distinct thumbpieces that differ from similar counterparts such as Limoges and trinket boxes.
