Description and Details
We are delighted to be able to offer this wonderful solid silver snuffer tray made by Henry Hallsworth in London, 1774.Featuring traditional Georgian decorations, this tray presents a wonderful hour-glass shape accented with a gadrooned border with four embedded Rococo-style scrolled shells.
The tray is supported by four cast-silver griffin feet.In the centre, a crest and motto for the Fox-Strangways family are present: "Faire Sans Dire" meaning 'to do without saying' in French. Furthermore and most notably, a five-pointed Earl's coronet is engraved signifying that this tray was likely owned by the 1st Earl of Ilchester; Stephen Fox-Strangways (1704–1776).
The 1st Earl of Ilchester - Stephen Fox-Strangways (1704–1776)
In addition to the historic interest of this piece, we personally are very much fond of the motto's meaning - a profound and proverbial reminder that actions speak louder than words and a memorandum for humility, modesty yet decisive action. Perhaps, in practical usage as a pen tray, we hope that it will be a nice visual reminder upon picking up one's pen. Quite suitably, silver itself has historically been a sophisticated & silent manner of conveying one's artistic and societal status as the object's implication is simply evident on sight: refined opulence. This snuffer tray would originally have been used to place a silver snuffer (for putting out candles) on top however, due to its versatile size and design, in the modern day, it is equally suitable for practical uses. Why not indulge and get creative with ideas of how to serve your favourite treats or perhaps as an opulent way of offering and enjoying a cigar in company with your guests? Other uses may include a pen tray, jewellery stand, cutlery holder, etc.
The tray is fully hallmarked with Georgian English marks on the base.
