Description and Details
This exceptional rose gold & silver snuff box was made by silversmith William Parker in London, 1824. Whilst Parker is a relatively unknown silversmith, the works of his craft are unquestionably magnificent. A quick search on the internet may not show up many archives, however, the few you may come across certainly have a lasting impression.
This table snuff box was made during the Georgian era yet features a blend of classic and atypical aesthetic designs. The exterior features a rose gold frame that is soldered onto the solid silver sides of the box which have been heavily chased with ornate floral and acanthus motifs.
The rose gold edges highlight and contrast the silver exterior tone whilst also adding further chased textures whilst the interior is embellished in a rich gold plate that remains in excellent order considering its age. The chasing and frame surround the whole box including the base and the top lid features a rose gold cartouche in the centre.
The weight and size of this snuff-box certainly conveys a sense of superb craftsmanship - upon holding in hand, one can truly appreciate its intricate detailing and meticulous craftsmanship. Under natural lighting, the arbitrary angles of the engraving reflect light and the external silver shines astonishingly.
The hinge and closure of the box function very well - the box does not have a tight fit (by design and not wear) however the heavy lid provides a secure closure for its intended purpose as a tabletop snuff box. The box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark, date mark, silver lion, Georgian head and the London assay mark.
A highly desirable Georgian snuff box for uncompromising collectors and a highly captivating piece that challenges the classical designs of typical Georgian silverware.
